About the Campaign
Beautiful Scotland is the largest environmental campaign in Scotland for communities who are working to improve and enhance their local area. The main campaign has been running for over 40 years and until recently was known as "Beautiful Scotland in Bloom".
You can find further information on the Neighbourhood Award scheme for beginner groups in the Neighbourhood Awards section
Entrants in the main campaign compete for prestigious trophies within 13 different categories. These are based on electoral roll population size, ranging from Clachan to City, and there are additional prizes for outstanding effort in specific areas, such as biodiversity, waste and tourism.
Judges take note of themes such as seasonal and permanent planting, but the awards are not just for the green-fingered. Sustainability, public participation and issues such as litter and graffiti are all taken into consideration. Entrants are also expected to show evidence of activity throughout the seasons.
The campaign is a programme of Keep Scotland Beautiful and is run by an Advisory Group consisting of representatives of entrant groups, judges, and relevant national organisations. Keep Scotland Beautiful is an operating name of Environmental Campaigns (Scotland). Scottish Charity Number SC030332.
Entry forms are sent out in January and returned by 29th February 2008. Judging itineraries are devised and judging takes place between 4th and 15th August 2008. The Beautiful Scotland Judges will travel the country in pairs and judge by category.
The Presentation of Awards will take place on Wednesday 17th September 2008 at the Brunton Halls in Musselburgh and will be hosted by East Lothian Council.
All entrant and Neighbourhood Awards groups are invited to attend an annual seminar in November. This is an opportunity to meet other groups and to talk to the judges. Talks and workshops provide the chance to learn something new.
